After dealing with frustrating dentures for years, you couldn’t be more excited to make the switch to All-on-4 dental implants. At long last, you’ll be able to dig into a juicy steak just as easily as you could with your natural teeth! That is, once you’ve finished recovering from the dental implant placement surgery. Even though you’ll have your brand-new teeth that same day, they won’t quite be ready for hearty foods like steak right away. To make the healing process fast and smooth, here’s a brief guide on what you should eat and drink following All-on-4 surgery.

What to Do Immediately After All-on-4 Surgery

You can expect your mouth to feel sore at first, and you might have trouble opening your mouth very wide. Still, it’s crucial to stay hydrated after your procedure. It will help your body heal efficiently. Drink water if possible, but other clear fluids should also be fine. Only sip a small amount at a time, but remember to do so at frequent intervals throughout the day so that your body stays well-hydrated.

Do not use a straw for several days after your surgery. It could dislodge the blood clots forming over the implant sites, causing pain and potentially delaying healing. Additionally, stay away from any hot or spicy drinks during All-on-4 recovery.

Stick to Fluids for the Next Two Weeks

As difficult as it may seem to avoid solid foods for two entire weeks, it will help your gums and jawbone remain undisturbed while they heal. There are still plenty of fluids you can enjoy during this time, including:

  • Water
  • Fruit juices
  • Coffee and creamer
  • Broth
  • Milkshakes
  • Gelatin
  • Pudding
  • Ice cream

Eat Only Soft Foods for Three Months After All-on-4 Surgery

Once two weeks have passed since your All-on-4 procedure, you can start expanding your diet to include items other than fluids. While you should still avoid foods that are particularly chewy, crunchy, or hard, you can begin enjoying foods such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Applesauce
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soft-cooked pasta
  • Eggs
  • Bananas and other soft fruits and veggies without seeds
  • Cheese

These easy-to-chew foods should give your body the nutrients it needs during All-on-4 recovery without disturbing the still-healing areas of your mouth.

After three months, you’ll visit your implant again. Once they give the all-clear that your implants have successfully integrated with your jawbone, you’ll be free to sink your teeth into practically any food you’d like to. By making a few smart choices as you recover, you’ll have a fully restored smile before you know it!
