procedure is not necessary if the crack does not involve the nerve, there is really NO WAY FOR THE DENTIST TO DETERMINE IF THIS IS THE CASE. 2. Place at least two posts in the roots of the tooth. Often, once a root canal is begun, the dentist can look into the pulp chamber and actually see the crack in the floor of the chamber. If this is the case, then the crack can be stabilized by placing posts in the roots on either side of the crack. This procedure is NOT indicated if it can be determined that the crack runs through the orifice of one of the canals. The only way to do this is by visual inspection. Unfortunately, the crack is not always visible to the dentist, even once the root canal procedure has been started and the chamber is empty. 3. Crown the tooth. This procedure is always indicated for back teeth with root canals, even if there is no crack in the tooth. Crowns and bridges can correct missing teeth, bite dysfunction, and functional or structural problems. A crown may be constructed to restore an individual damaged tooth back to its original form and function, while a bridge may be utilized to replace one or more teeth. These restorations are cemented onto the teeth and are referred to as "fixed" dentistry as opposed to a restoration of missing teeth with a removable appliance or partial denture. Back to Top •Implant Crowns Dental implants offer the most natural option for prosthetic teeth. After a comprehensive evaluation, if Dr. Gary Paterick believes dental implants would work well for you, he can place the implants, which will provide strong anchors for handcrafted restorations. Dentures and bridges may also be anchored to dental implants. If you want a secure, fully functional, and beautiful prosthetic, dental implants may be your solution. Back to Top •Dental Extractions A dental extraction (also referred to as exodontia) is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to prevent restoration. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment. Back to Top •Dentures Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. Made of acrylic, porcelain or metal, dentures are custom fit to give you a natural look and feel. An over denture is a removable denture that fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth or implants. The natural teeth must be prepared to provide stability and support for the denture. Your dentist can determine if an over denture would be suitable for you. Back to Top •Root Canals Years ago, a badly infected tooth, or one that just had significant decay, was doomed to be extracted. Today the majority of these teeth can be salvaged through a procedures utilized by both the General Dentist and the root canal specialist, the Endodontist. Extraction is truly our last resort! Some indications of the need for root canal treatment may be: * Spontaneous pain or throbbing while biting. * Sensitivity to hot and cold foods. * Severe decay or an injury that creates an abcess (infection) in the bone.
